An ear infection is an infection of the middle ear, which is the space behind the eardrum. There are two main types of ear infections: acute and chronic. Acute ear infections are more common and usually clear up quickly, while chronic ear infections can last for a longer period of time.
Causes of ear infections include viral or bacterial infections, allergies, and blockages in the ear canal. Symptoms can include ear pain, fever, difficulty hearing, and drainage from the ear.
Diagnosis of an ear infection is typically made by a doctor during an examination of the ear. Treatment options include antibiotics, pain relievers, and in some cases, surgery. In some cases, ear infections will clear up on their own without treatment.
