Professor Margaret Johnson

Professor Margaret Johnson is one of the leading Consultants in Thoracic Medicine. Currently, she practises at both the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and our hospital. Her training took place at the Brompton Hospital, where she completed her MD from the University of London, focusing on breathlessness.

Areas of Specialist Interest

Professor Johnson’s main areas of interest span a wide range of respiratory conditions. These include respiratory infection, asthma, chronic cough, breathlessness, bronchiectasis, and COPD. Additionally, her expertise covers allergy, lung cancer, and sleep apnoea. Furthermore, she specialises in pneumonia, TB, HIV, and management of ‘Long COVID’.

Research and Publications

Throughout her career, Professor Johnson has remained active in cutting-edge clinical research. Her particular focus lies in respiratory infection, TB, and HIV. Notably, she has published over 600 articles in peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of her contributions, she was made Professor of Medicine at University College London in 2005.

Leadership and Professional Roles

Professor Johnson has held many senior positions in Medicine. For example, she served as Medical Director of the Royal Free. Moreover, she was Chairman of the British HIV Association and Academic Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians. At present, she serves as Clinical Director of the National Institute for Health Research North Thames Clinical Research Network.
